Lord Sri Krishna's Body

Question: Lord Sri Krishna's Body

Why when Lord Krishna left this material world did He leave His body here?

Answer: Naturally It Remains Here

Krishna returned to the spiritual world in His original spiritual form. But since this entire material world is His virat-rupa, His so-called material body, naturally that form of His is left behind when He returns to the spiritual world.

In this connection my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, explains as follow in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, 1st Canto, Chapter 14, Text 8:

"It should be understood that when Lord Krishna was apparently killed by the bow and arrow of the hunter, the Lord left His so-called material body in the material world. The Lord is kaivalya, and for Him there is no difference between matter and spirit because everything is created from Him. Therefore His quitting one sort of body or accepting body does not mean that He is like the ordinary living being. All such activities are simultaneously one and different by His inconceivable potency."

How the Soul Gets a Spiritual Body?

Question: How the Soul Gets a Spiritual Body?

Upon death how does the spirit soul enter into a spiritual body or how does he get a spiritual body? After attaining the spiritual world will the spirit soul able to remember all his past lifetime's activities while he was in the material world?

Answer: He Already is the Spiritual Body

The soul does not have to get a spiritual body because he already is the spiritual body. In conditioned life that spiritual body is not manifested because it is covered by the gross and subtle material bodies. When the conditioned soul becomes liberated and goes back to Godhead, he simply abandons the gross and subtle coverings and fully remanifests himself in his eternally youthful, deathless spiritual body. There is nothing more glorious than this.

Regarding the soul who goes back to Godhead remembering his activities that were conducted while he was in the material world, Srila Prabhupada has written in a letter to one of his disciples:

"You asked if we will remember the earth, when in Vrindavan, and the answer is, 'Certainly.' When Narada Muni was talking to Vyasadeva, as you may have read in first volume of our Srimad-Bhagavatam, he was in a spiritual body, but he remembered his previous life and explained it to Vyasadeva. In material life there is forgetfulness, but in spiritual life there is no forgetfulness."

Research in Spirituality

Question: Research in Spirituality

I want to do research in spirituality. What steps should I follow?

Answer: The Ultimate Scientific Experiment

Carefully read the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and scientifically experiment with it by carefully following its teachings making your own consciousness the object of the experiment. Then after thorough experiment and observation you may draw your scientific conclusions regarding what is amazing process of Krishna consciousness.

The essential items for your scientific experiment are that you should chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra every day without fail while keeping the test tube of your consciousness pure by strictly avoiding illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. You should also restrict your diet to only taking Krishna prasadam (vegetarian foodstuffs offered to Lord Krishna with love and devotion). I can assure you that if you will strictly perform this experiment for at least six months, you will have many profound scientific realizations. So I wish you the very best and encourage you to take this experiment up wholeheartedly.

Is Accumulation of Material Wealth Good?

Question: Is Accumulation of Material Wealth Good?

Wealthy people have more probability of turning to spiritual side as they have access to the knowledge. Poor people are unaware of the spiritual knowledge and hence will never get to the spiritual side. Therefore, making people wealthy seems the only way to increase the number of people following spiritual path. Am I correct? Why are we not working on this rather than trying to make a few wealthy people turn to the spiritual path? I get confused over these thoughts.
Answer: Accumulation of Spiritual Wealth is the Best

Wealth and poverty are not determining factors for a person's taking to Krishna consciousness. Sometimes we see that a poor person is more inclined to spiritual life than a wealthy person. So instead of focusing our attention on how to make everyone more wealthy in the material sense, we should devote our energy to making everyone unlimitedly wealthy in the spiritual sense by awakening the dormant Krishna consciousness in the hearts of all human beings by the massive public performance of harinam sankirtana in every town and village all over the world on a regular daily basis.

In a Panic Over the Age of the Universe

Question: In a Panic Over the Age of the Universe

You were saying that the universe is 155 trillion years old. I am in a total panic hearing this. Ideally there should be no beginning and end for the universe with it only perhaps going through changes.

Answer: Manifestation and Non-Manifestation Phases

It is not a matter of my opinion. I am simply presenting what is coming down from the previous acharyas. The total spiritual sky is eternal. It has a covered portion known as the material sky in which millions and billions of universes are floating. The entire material sky goes through phases of manifestation and non-manifestation in accordance with the exhalation and inhalation of Mahavishnu. During its manifest stage when Mahavishnu exhales the material universes come out, and during its unmanifest stage when Mahavishnu inhales the material universes are merged into the total material energy and are withdrawn into the transcendental body of Mahavishnu. Our particular universe was manifested approximately 155 trillion years ago and will be destroyed in approximately 155 trillion years from now. While within the material sky the universes are being manifested and non-manifested for all eternity, within the spiritual sky millions and billions of spiritual planets remain eternally manifested.

Mahamaya in the Spiritual World?

Question: Mahamaya in the Spiritual World?

I have a question regarding the fall of the living being, the jiva. In the Srimad Bhagavatam, 1st Canto, Chapter 1, Verse 1 it is stated:

"I therefore meditate upon Him, Lord Sri Krishna, who is eternally existent in the transcendental abode, which is forever free from the illusory representations of the material world".

I understand yogamaya, the spiritual energy, is conducting the spiritual world and she expands in the form of mahamaya, the material energy,to conduct the material world. In the case of the jiva falling from the spiritual world, would it not be the influence of mahamaya, and how is she existing in the eternal abode of Sri Krishna?

Answer: No. She is Only in the Material World.

It is a fact that mahamaya, the material energy, does not act in the spiritual world. So this may cause one to wonder that since mahamaya is not present in the spiritual world, what could influence the jiva, the living entity, to leave the spiritual world and come to the material world?

What happens is that since the living entity is part of Krishna, who is supremely independent, he also possesses a minute degree of independence. Since he possesses independence he must necessarily possess the power to misuse it. If he chooses to misuse it, he instantaneously finds himself in the clutches of mahamaya, the material energy. He does not require the power of the material energy to misuse his independence because his independence alone is sufficient empowerment. But as soon as he does so, he is immediately bound hands and foot by the material energy until that time when he is fortunate to be released by the mercy of Lord Sri Krishna's pure devotee.

Were All Souls Originally With Krishna?

Question: Were All Souls Originally With Krishna?

Were all we souls originally with Krishna in His highest abode? Say a devotee makes it back to Godhead, does he have a chance of falling down again? Or, were we never originally with Krishna in His highest abode and that's our final destination without the risk of falling down?

Answer: Yes

All of us here in this material world were originally with Krishna in the spiritual world serving Him as His devotees. By misuse of our minute independence we fell down into the cycle of birth and death. Just as it is sometimes said, "Once burned, twice shy," if we realize our mistake and go back to Godhead, we will not make the same mistake twice. Of course, since we have free will eternally we could fall a second time. But who would stick their hand in the fire a second time after already being burned once?

Beginning of Hinduism?

Question:  Beginning of Hinduism?

Did the Hare Krishna movement originate in India?  Is the movement of Indian origin?

Is Hinduism the oldest religion?  Did it begin in India?

Answer:  There is No Such Thing

Although historically rooted in India, the Hare Krishna movement did not originate in India.  It originates in the spiritual world and was first manifested in this universe 155 trillion years ago when Lord Krishna enlightened Lord Brahma with Krishna consciousness just after the creation of this universe.

The word "Hindu" is not found in Vedic scriptures, the foundation of Indian culture. It was coined by the Muslims to describe those persons living east of the River Sindhu, which is now known as the Indus River. Therefore, strictly speaking the term "Hinduism" is a misnomer. Vedic scholars know that the actual term for India's ancient religious culture is "sanatana dharma", the eternal religion of the soul.

Sanatana dharma is indeed the world's oldest religion because it has no beginning point in history. It means to fully absorb yourself in loving service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna or Vishnu. There is no such thing as the beginning of sanatana dharma or "Hinduism" because, like the Hare Krishna movement, it has no beginning point in history having originated in the spiritual world.

Sometimes I think your approach to spirituality is very radical, and at other

Question to Swami Shankarananda ji:  Sometimes I think your approach to spirituality is very radical, and at other

Answer:  It’s probably better for others to evaluate my approach, but your question brings up some interesting issues.  I am a traditionalist as far as lineage goes.  A teacher should have been initiated and designated by his own teacher.  By initiation, I mean actual transmission of the awakening by Shakitpat.  Also, it’s important that a spiritual teacher be told by his own teacher to serve that function, although there may be exceptions to this rule.  Some of the offerings of the New Age marketplace seem shallow and mind-born because they lack dimension.  Let’s say that somebody reads a lot of texts, listens to a number of Gurus speak and decides he has it all worked out, and is ready to hang out his shingle.  Such a teaching would lack profundity and stability.  It wouldn’t deliver.

On the other hand, some of the religious traditions, which have a lot of history and lineage, can lack the spontaneity and aliveness of being present.  They have too much history, too much orthodoxy and too much doctrine.  When I read some of those texts, I sometimes feel that the layers of maya are covering the original truth.  There may have been a great sage whose awakening gave birth to a particular tradition, but that original lightening bolt has, by now, gone too deep into the earth.  It has wandered too far from the original grace and become enmattered.

Such traditions, and I’m not mentioning any names – you’ll have to use sodium pentothal on me – have been worked on by too many minds.  They are too religious and intellectual, and inspiration has been replaced by dogma.  Every word that the original teacher might have uttered has been commented on and footnoted to the point where each is a technical term that can’t be approached directly, but only with the help of a team of scholars and linguists.  This accounts for the curious phenomenon of Zen Buddhism, which reacted against the over-intellectualisation of the Buddhism of that period by utterly rejecting all doctrines and even all rationality in order to freshly encounter reality.

There is one more thing I would say.  We are spiritually at an interesting historical moment.  I was part of a wave of seekers who went to the East after the sixties and imbibed the Eastern teaching.  I approached those teachings with respect and reverence and for many years, I marinated myself in them.  However, I agree with a scholar hero of mine, Heinrich Zimmer, who said that the West would have to find its own solution, different from Eastern solutions.

Nowadays, I am one of a number of teachers from my generation who have brought the Eastern teachings back to the West.  While I revere those teachings, I also respect our cultural norms and methods.  There was a time, mind you, when I was so in awe of Indian culture and thought that I was ready to throw out everything Western.  I no longer feel that way.  My approach now is pragmatic.  I think we have to take the insights and techniques of the East and work with them in a natural way within the parameters of our own understanding and culture.  Yoga is universal and Western culture just needs a little something added to it to connect it to the divine.  Of course, adding that little something changes everything.

So there you have it.  The dilemma is that we’re caught between the proven worth of a tradition and the aliveness of the present moment.  One impulse says that whatever is new-minded is simply the product of somebody’s cleverness and of no substance, while another says, ‘Tear down the institutions, burn all the teachings, experience God in the moment!’  Both of these unruly beasts live within me, I have to admit.

What’s the answer?  As always, it’s a matter of discrimination and concrete individual cases.  So now tell me, am I a radical or a traditionalist?
