Sai Baba Man of Miracles

India has always nurtured true yogins--those who have transcended the lower self, those in whom wonder-working powers of siddhis have flourished. These powers, or some of them, have been brought into the research laboratories of the para-psychologists who call them extra-sensory perception and psycho-kinesis. Others call them miracles. Whatever the terminology, such powers and their practitioners demand sensible attention. This account relates some of the achievements of one of the most impressive men of miracles to appear in centuries. Satya Sai Baba--his followers believe him to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi who died in 1918--appears to have been born with phenomenal powers, which he used in childhood and has employed constantly and openly ever since. They include all the varieties of E.S.P. and P.K. known to psychic science and more besides. The author, a Westerner devoted to science and logic, spent many months with Satya Said Baba; he claims to have found that his "unscientific," "illogical" miracles were, in fact, genuine yogic siddhis. He found, too, that along with Christ-like miraculous powers went a Christ-like love, compassion and the God-knowledge that opens the door to a new vision of life.

SAI BABA, By Wayne Peterson

Sai Baba is a name known to millions around the world. From India to Canada Sai Baba is believed by millions to be an Avatar, or divine incarnation. Sathya Sai Baba said, “The Avatar comes to reveal man to himself, to restore him his birthright of Atmic bliss. He does not come to found a new creed, to breed a new faction, to instill a new God....The Avatar comes as man in order to demonstrate that man is divine, and to be within reach of man.”

Sai Baba is often called the “Man of Miracles.” He materializes objects, as if from thin air, and is famous for producing vibhuti, as ash like substance that his devotees eat as a blessing, not unlike Christians who partake of the body and blood of Christ in the communion wafer and wine. Sai Baba once created a rainbow at high noon in a hot desert climate for a group of Harvard scientists, demonstrating that he has control over the natural elements. He has also been known to raise a dead man to life.

I first heard of Sai Baba during a lecture by Benjamin Creme in 1982. Mr. Creme, a London based artist, had completed a public lecture about the Masters of Wisdom and Lord Maitreya when he announced that he would channel energy from Sai Baba. I thought this was completely far-fetched and rather loony New Age over statement by Mr. Creme. However, immediately I felt a powerful force against my body. It continued like a strong wind and soon my chair and I slid a few feet. Stunned, I had to admit something unusual was happening. I mentally asked Sai Baba that if He would end this force colliding with me instantly I would believe He was an Avatar. Immediately it stopped. I was an instant believer.

In the following years, I experienced Sai Baba in many ways that were quite miraculous. Some of these stories are in my book, Extraordinary Times, Extraordinary Beings. Baba’s energy stunned one of my houseguests when he noticed that whenever I spoke of Sai Baba a powerful perfume scent was emitted from my chest, or the heart center.

There is a close relationship between Maitreya, Sai Baba, and all the Masters of Wisdom. Most of the world is generally not aware of this relationship in any manner. In the coming years as the public becomes familiar with the Spiritual Hierarchy, they will also come to know better this great Avatar, Sathya Sai Baba. Many attempts have been made to discredit Sai Baba, but He will prevail and demonstrate to all that He is indeed our great friend from a high spiritual place.

The Hindu growl

The young Hindu is angry and intolerant. What triggered the change? By Vijaya Pushkarna & Kallol Bhattacherjee

The Ranas of Amritsar could not tolerate the pro-Khalistani terrorism of the mid-1980s. So they shifted their home and business to Mohali on the outskirts of Chandigarh. Many like them, mainly Hindus, fled from terrorised Punjab to safer places. The exodus of Pandits from Kashmir in the nineties, too, was out of fear. But no longer is the young Hindu willing to run away from the battlefield. And for the first time in Indian history, the Centre has sent advisories to four state governments, three ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, directing them to abide by the Constitution and protect minorities. The advisory is just one step short of Article 355, a rarely used formality before dismissing a state government.

The Hindu's tolerance level is dropping, and today he is an angry man. As head of the poly-trauma ward of Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Jaipur, Dr Rajendra Chaturvedi attends to victims of riots, accidents and domestic violence. But the May 13 blasts changed him. "There were more than 60 casualties," he said. "Healthy men bled to death in minutes." The Brahmin now sports a tilak and speaks out against Islamic terror.
On September 13, death visited Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi. Sumeet, owner of a popular DVD shop in Palika Bazaar, was sending SMSes to loyal clients about the new titles in stock when the bombs went off. "Who would not get angry? But we were not scared. We are ready to fight them whoever they are," he said.

Terror campaigns irk the average Hindu. "Delaying Afzal Guru's hanging [in the Parliament attack case] sends out the signal that the government is unwilling to act on terror," said M.L. Gupta, a Jaipur blasts survivor. The sentiment was echoed by Rajinder Singh Shekhawat, a taxi driver who witnessed the explosion at Jaipur's Badi Chaupad. "Hindus have many enemies. The biggest one is terrorism, condoned by a corrupt government," he said.

Pankaj Singh, 30, executive member of the BJP Uttar Pradesh unit, said, "The feeling is that Hindus are branded communal if they refuse to tolerate terrorism, infiltration and loss of educational and economic opportunities." Youngsters who went to Azamgarh to protest the attack on Gorakhpur MP, Yogi Aditya Nath, felt the same way.

Bangalore-based entrepreneur Savitri Shanker (name changed) said she was annoyed by reports of Hindus baptising their children for securing admissions in Christian schools and colleges. She also talked of her help's cancer-stricken relative who was taken to a hospice. The hospice management promised the family free treatment and other benefits if they would convert. The family refused and admitted the patient in a hospital. Shanker is "sad, but not surprised" by the rampage against churches in Karnataka and Orissa.

Perhaps the young Hindu's knee-jerk reaction has been triggered by the change in circumstances. Pavitra and Kunal (names changed), a Bangalore-based couple, said that their views had changed since their college days seven years ago. Said Pavitra, 26: "We had many Muslim classmates who were close friends. They looked and dressed like us. Now they have begun to wear their Muslim identity on their sleeve. We are not able to laugh at the same jokes and there is a bit of tension when we meet."

Kunal said: "After the bomb blasts, there was definitely an awkwardness on our part. And when we hear of them getting preferential quotas, it hurts." The couple said they still would "not look away if we see them". But they are thinking of volunteering for or contributing to a pro-Hindu organisation. They asked, "If it is OK for others to affirm their religion, is it wrong for us to do the same?"

Fears that were confined to the minority communities are now surfacing among upwardly mobile Hindus. Said businesswoman Anita Vasanth, 48: "It's about wanting India for all of us Indians. To get minority votes politicians are doing so many things at my cost. Don't thwart me to make others grow; it leads to heartburn and more."

While such thoughts and behavioural shifts are seen across the country, unorganised and spontaneous hit-backs have been relatively few. But it is a matter of time before that happens, said a senior BJP leader who did not wish to be named. "We are sitting on a time bomb," he said. "It [the backlash] can happen any time. It is just that there is no pro-Hindu political party." What about the BJP? "Who says the BJP is pro-Hindu?" he asked. "What has the party done for the Hindus? The BJP has taken up the issue of minority appeasement to make a vote bank of those opposed to such appeasement." He said if Hindus had seen the BJP as pro-Hindu, the party would have got more than 400 seats in the post-Ayodhya Lok Sabha polls.

Veteran journalist and Prasar Bharati Board chairman M.V. Kamath said that a Hindu awakening had occurred, and he attributes the BJP victory in Karnataka to "the constant and irritating stress on secularism at the cost of Hindu sensitivity." Vinayak Deshpande who oversees the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's operations in north India said that Hindus were defenceless in facing the cultural attack from the west, and the religious attacks from missionaries and terrorists. He said the larger Hindu community should plan and combat those problems. But Hindu leaders know too well that anti-terror anger is not a strong enough glue to bind the majority community.

VHP to Hold Brainstorming Session On Conversion

The VHP’s central governing body is likely to deliberate on ways to further intensify their campaign against religious conversion in Kandhamal, Orissa, and north-eastern states at its two-day brain storming session here beginning on 25 September.
About 300 saints from across the country, all the Shankaracharya and top VHP leaders including Mr Pravin Togadia, Mr Ashok Singhal and prominent parishad functionaries would take part in the meeting, VHP sources told The Statesman. The central governing body meets twice a year to take stock of the progress of various tasks assigned to its units across the country. Based on the assessment of the previous work the parishad sets the future course of action for the organisation.
The murder of VHP leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, and four others on 23 August, VHP sources said, had brought to the fore the “loopholes” in the organisation’s work against religious conversion. They said VHP was no match to the resourceful Christian missionaries. The governing body is likely to firm up a plan to mobilise adequate resources to prevent religious conversion and announce a countrywide action plan against conversion, sources said.
According to the VHP in about 4-5 districts surrounding Kandmal the dominant ST and tribal community make up 27 per cent of population. They are below the poverty line and hence prone to religious conversion. The VHP now plans to rework its strategy in the region, which recently witnessed widespread arson and violence in the wake of the murder of Swami Laxmanananda.
The VHP conclave would take up the issue of cow slaughter. It is also expected to take stock of the Ramsetu issue and set the agenda for its future campaigns on various issues ahead of Assembly elections in some states and the Lok Sabha elections slated for next year.

Opposition out to malign BJP

Sticking to the theory that the recent spate of attacks on churches were a conspiracy, Karnataka Chief Minister, BS Yeddyurappa on Monday said that the police had arrested three persons including the son of a local Congress leader in connection with the violence.

Yeddyurappa who convened an emergency Cabinet meeting said that the incident at Sagar in Shimoga district was the handiwork of three persons including the son of a local Congress leader.

The chief minister said that Sudarshan, one of the men arrested is the son of Lalithamma, a local Congress leader and former member of the town's municipal council. Ravi, another person arrested in connection with the attack is said to have instigated these youth to desecrate Churches by promising to pay Rs 15 lakh.

Apart from this the police have also arrested five persons who were indulging in aggressive propaganda. The CM said that these persons were indulging in religious conversions in the Kodagu district and material to this effect has also been seized from them.

On the action taken in the aftermath of Sunday's violence at Bangalore, the CM said that a constable who was on duty at the time of the violence had been suspended. The CM said that there was nothing for the minorities to worry as security has been beefed up around churches and mosques. At least 5 constables have been posted around each church and patrolling has been intensified.

The provisions of the Goonda Act would be invoked against those persons indulging in such attacks, the CM also warned.

The CM said that there was a desperate attempt being made to malign the image of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in south India. The conspiracy to malign the government in the state would be be foiled, the CM said.

Yeddyurappa said that the opposition could not digest the fact that the BJP had achieved so much in the first 100 days in office and hence were out to spoil the reputation of the government.

Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and JD-S supremo H D Deve Gowda are desperately trying to topple this government, Yeddyurappa claimed.

DENIGRATION OF HINDU GODS IS THE REAL REASON FOR ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS IN MANGALORE

The Following are the list of abuses from one such book – Satya Darshini – distributed by the missionaries of New Life. This book is in Kannada and the translation of the abusive passage is as follows.

· Urvashi – the daughter of Narayana– is a prostitute. Vashitha is the son of this prostitute. He in turn married his own Mother. Such a degraded person is the Guru of the Hindu God Rama. (page 48)

· When Krishna himself is wallowing in darkness of hell, how can he enlighten others? Since Krishna himself is a shady character, there is a need for us to liberate his misled followers. (page 50)

· It was Brahma himself who kidnapped Sita. Since Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were themselves the victims of lust, it is a sin to consider them as Gods. (page 39)

· When the Trinity of Hinduism (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) are consumed by lust and anger, how can they liberate others. Their projection as Gods is nothing but a joke. (page 39).

· When Vishnu asked Brahma to commit a sin, he immediately did so. How can such a “evil brahma” be a Creator of this Universe? How is it possible for both the sinner and the entity which provoked the sin to be gods? (page 39)

· God, please liberate the sinful people of India who are worshipping False Gods that believe in the pleasures of illicit ‘Vyabichari’ relationships. (Page 39).

2. All the 16 incidents that took place were not attack on Churches. In fact, unauthorized prayer halls were attacked where the blasphemous pamphlets were distributed and aggressive proselytisation was taking place. These 16 incidents were not localized but took place across three districts of Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

3. The only place where attacks took place apart from New Life Prayer Halls was at a small prayer hall in the premises of Milagres Church in Mangalore, where some miscreants had damaged a Jesus idol. The VHP and the Bajrang Dal have condemned the attack at this place. Following this incident, a Christian mob gathered and the situation went out of control as the mob started pelting stones and disrupting traffic. The police was forced to intervene and this resulted in unsavoury violence.

4. Since the past two days, it is not Hindu-Christian clashes that are taking place. In fact, it is more appropriate to call it”Christian-Police” clashes since the Christians holed up in Churches have engaged themselves in pelting of stones and disruption of traffic. The Police were forced to enter the Church to clear the mob and they found arms inside the Church.

5. Incidents of Stabbing were reported in around four or five places across Mangalore district. In fact, an activist belonging to Shri Ram Sena was stabbed which led to a bandh call by Shri Ram Sena – a Hindu outfit that is not connected to Sangh Parivar.

6. The VHP and the Bajrang Dal have condemned the desecration of Jesus idol at the prayer hall adjacent to the Milagres Church in Mangalore. They have also clarified that they are not against the Catholic faith and the Churches. However, they have clarified that the public outcry would continue as long as illicit conversion activities and blasphemy of Hindu gods take place.

7. Even the Kandhmahal murder — which involved the killing of Hindu monk Swami Lakshmananda by missionaries – seems to have caste a shadow on this incident since the general public seems to have seen through Christian aggression.

8. It may be recalled that there was a public outcry against illegal prayer halls in Davanagere district last week. In that case, the administration had closed the unauthorized prayer halls that were mushrooming in the region.

THE FINAL RECONCILIATION

THE OUTCOME OF HINDU-CHRISTIAN NEGOTIATION IN MANGALORE

Christian leaders and Hindu leaders held a meeting to thrash out the differences at The Circuit House in Mangalore.

The Hindu delegation consisted of Prof M B Puranik, Vibhag Sanghachallak and VHP district President, Dr. Prabhakar Bhat, Prant Karyavaya, Dr. Madhav Bhandary, Vibhaga Karyakarini Sadasya, Monappa Bhandary, district BJP President, Shrikar Prabhu, Jagadish Shenava, Rajagopala Rai. The Christian delegation was led by Fr. J B Crasta, Louis Pinto,Felix Alberque, M P Noronha, William D’Souza, Stany Alvares.

The negotiation was held under the supervision of district in-charge Minister Shri Krishna Palemar. The persons who mediated towards bringing both sides together were Dharmaraj, Mangalore-based-builder and S Ramesh, Social worker.

The Hindu delegation put forth its view stating that

  1. Hindu society was never aggressive and in fact encouraged and promoted plurality in society.
  2. Christianity grew because of Hindu patronage
  3. Christians were denigrating Hindu faith through distribution of pamphlets denigrating Hindu God. (Satya Darshini pamphlet distributed by New Life says that Hindu gods were promiscuous and wallowing in darkness of hell).
  4. Christians were objecting to Hindu articles of faith like Rakhi, bindi, flowers et al
  5. Christians used the children of Hindu parents when the institutions were protesting against Kandmal violence
  6. The Christians in Mangalore had even protested when Jayalalitha Government had banned conversion in Tamil Nadu
  7. They had even pelted stones and had injured policemen who were trying to protect law and order.
  8. Though the Christian delegation was distancing itself from New Life, they were in fact supporting it by protesting in a big way as if to condone the New Life activities.
  9. The Schools run by Christians were psychologically dominating Hindu school children as if to give a bad impression about the Hindu faith.
  10. Harmony can be established only when the Christians observe their religion in private without encroaching on the domain of Hindu faith.
  11. Conversions were affecting the family life as several families had broken up due to conversion activities.
  12. Conversions due to inducement and allurements are not in the interest of the society. There is nothing wrong in voluntary conversions.
  13. The Resurgent Hindu society would not tolerate such proselytisation activities which aim at division rather than integration.
  14. The Service activities of the Church were more directed towards the ulterior motives of proselytisation.
  15. The Hindus won’t harm the Christian faith in any way if they do it without forcing it on others. And there would not be any cause for conflict.
  16. There is no question of social boycott against Christians. In fact, the Hindus are for cordial relations with Christians.
  17. In case of any further problems, the problems would be solved through bilateral talks involving leaders of both sides.
  18. The Hindu leaders made it clear that they did not support the attack on the building that housed the Cloistered Nuns. They said that it was inadvertent and it would not be repeated.

The Church leaders put forth its view in the following manner

  1. Christians are feeling insecure due to the recent spate of violence in New Life prayer halls
  2. Is it wrong on our part to serve the society?
  3. We don’t have anything to do with New Life activities except that both of us respect Jesus and Bible.
  4. Hindu leaders may stop the Hindus from attending New Life congregational meetings.
  5. Educate the Hindus in such a manner that they refrain from New Life activities.
  6. In the case of Kandmal incidents, the Hindus had provoked the Christians through banners depicting the Christians in poor light
  7. Any case of provocation from any side is improper.
